David Alter PhD

David Alter, PhD is a psychologist, board certified in clinical health psychology and psychological hypnosis. He is the Clinical Director of Partners in Healing, an integrative medicine center in the western part of the Twin Cities. His intereset in integrative medicine developed early on as the son of a neurologist and a teacher. His involvement with clinical hypnosis – its application and its history – is a model for integrative learning. It has reinforced his beliefs about how integrative medicine can help clients activate their innate healing capacities. It is a belief that he shares with his colleagues at Partners in Healing.

Bob Anderson MD

Bob Anderson graduated with honors from medical school in 1957 and has been practicing for over 40 years. Along the way he became a charter fellow of the American Association of Family Physicians (AAFP), a diplomat of the American Board of Forensic Psychology (ABFP), served as a Clinical Assistant Professor of family medicine at the University of Washington, founding Chief of Staff at Stevens Memorial Hospital, Edmonds, Washington, and president of the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA) . He founded the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM) in 1996. He currently teaches “The Art of Primary Care” at Bastyr University in Seattle. He has authored five major books, the most recent of which is the Clinician's Guide to Holistic Medicine (2001).

Al Augustine JD

Al Augustine is a Senior Partner at the law firm of Augustine, Kern and Levens, Ltd. He is the former Chief Regulatory Attorney in the state of Illinois and for over 30 years has been representing and protecting professionals before licensing boards in many states and/or before federal agencies. The ideology of AKL, Ltd. centers on the premise that competent adults should be able to choose their health care pratitioner, in licensing matters. AKL, Ltd. is located in Chicago, IL, with affiliated offices in New Jersey and New York.

Hal Blatman MD

Hal Blatman is the Medical Director of the Blatman Pain Clinic, a holistic treatment center for pain patients. He is a student of the late Dr. Janet Travell, physician to President Kennedy and developer of myofascial pain medicine. Dr. Blatman is the immediate past president of the AHMA, and author of Winners’ Guide to Pain Relief, a self-help book that makes myofascial pain easily understandable. He runs a hands-on comprehensive education program to teach practitioners how to treat myofascial pain disorders.

Stephen Center MD

Stephen A. Center, MD is a well-known physician in San Diego, and has been a member of Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla for over a decade. His practice emphasizes integrated medical care, combining the best of western medicine and holistic medical care. A graduate of the University of Michigan and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Dr. Center trained at University of California, San Diego Health Center and Tulane University in general and orthopedic surgery. Although western trained, Dr. Center has embraced what has been described as "integrated medicine" over the past 12 years, as this type of practice provides patients with an individualized approach to health maintenance and disease management. His treatment options often include not only pharmaceuticals, but herbs, homeopathics and other "nutriceuticals," including vitamins, minerals and trace elements. The goal is to provide a balanced approach for maximizing wellness, as well as to slow down and possibly reverse the aging process.

Bruce Cryer MA

Bruce Cryer is the President and CEO of HeartMath, LLC, having helped launch the non-profit Institute of HeartMath with founder Doc Childre in 1991. Bruce is the key architect of programs that incorporate HeartMath’s innovative biomedical research into practical tools and strategies to enhance health, performance, creativity, innovation and productivity for both the individual and the organization. He has successfully guided HeartMath programs at Duke University, Mayo Health System, Kaiser Permanente, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and others. Mr. Cryer is an adjunct Professor at Stanford Business School’s Executive Program. He is author of From Chaos to Coherence: The Power of Change Performance. He is also lead author of the Harvard Business Review article Pull the Plug on Stress and co-author of An Inner Quality Approach to Reducing Stress and Improving Physical and Emotional Wellbeing at Work. He has also written for many other publications, and is an internationally recognized speaker.

J. David Forbes MD

J. David Forbes MD, ABIHM is the president-elect for the AHMA and the founder and director of Nashville Integrated Medicine, a center combining western and alternative approaches to healing through a holistic approach. He is a practicing internist and a founding diplomat of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM). Dr. Forbes’ practice centers on lifestyle management and stress reduction, and his passion is the healing of emotional wounds and patterns through safe, body-centered experiential work combined with intuitive meditation practice.

Patrick Hanaway MD

Patrick Hanaway is a board-certified family physician with a medical degree from Washington University (St. Louis) and residency training at the University of New Mexico. Dr. Hanaway received his BS from the University of Wisconsin in molecular biology. He has done research in a wide variety of areas, including, muscle biology, neurochemistry, lipid metabolism, public health, preventive medicine, immunology, digestion, and nutrition. In addition to being a family physician, Dr. Hanaway is currently the president of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM). Dr. Hanaway co-founded Family to Family: Your Home for Whole Family Health in Asheville, NC, and is the Chief Medical Officer of Genova Diagnostics. Dr. Hanaway has lectured extensively on the clinical application of nutrition and genomics, particularly in the areas of digestion, oxidative stress, inflammation, hormone metabolism, and achieving long-term wellness.

Magda Havas PhD

Magda Havas is an Associate Professor at Trent University, where she teaches and does research on the biological effects of electromagnetic pollution. She has co-edited three books and has authored more than 100 publications. Dr. Havas is science advisor on electromagnetic frequency (EMF) - related issues to non-profit organizations and provides expert testimony on the health effects of electrosmog.

Elise Hewitt DC

Dr. Hewitt has been in private practice since graduating summa cum laude and class valedictorian from Western States Chiropractic College in 1988. Dr. Hewitt is board certified in chiropractic pediatrics and has obtained certification in craniosacral therapy from the Upledger Institute. Dr. Hewitt writes and lectures nationwide. She has been published in the scientific literature and is a co-author of the ‘chiropractic’ chapter in Integrative Pediatric Medicine, part of Andrew Weil’s integrative medicine textbook series, to be released in August, 2009. Dr. Hewitt is president of the Pediatrics Council of the American Chiropractic Association’s (ACA). She serves on the Board of Directors of the Integrative Pediatrics Council. In 2008, Dr. Hewitt was elected as a fellow into the International College of Chiropractors.

Keith Jordan DC

Dr. Keith Jordan (or Dr. Keith) is a native of Cleveland, with a doctoral degree from the National College of Chiropractic in Chicago. He worked in several multi-disciplinary practices alongside medical doctors and gained an appreciation for both the strong points and shortcomings of traditional medicine. In 1996 he founded Optimal Health Chiropractic Clinic, a true comprehensive, holistic care clinic. Five years ago he was awakened from a dream/vision with tears in his eyes of his next clinic, a center for healing now known as Optimal Wellness Center. Dr. Keith is a person who feels it is his gift and calling to help people heal themselves from perceived symptoms of disease whether they are spiritual, emotional, biochemical, nutritional, or physical in nature.

Leland Kaiser PhD

Leland R. Kaiser, PhD is a health care futurist, an intuitive, an executive coach, a community organizer, and an organizational consultant. He is a pioneer in many emerging areas of health care including innovation, research and development, distance education, hospital-based community outreach programs, and spirituality. He is a provocateur and mentor to many hospitals and health care systems. Dr. Kaiser is founder and President of Kaiser Consulting, a health care consulting firm located in Brighton, CO. He is also a co-founder of the Kaiser Institute, a postgraduate educational program providing advanced training in intuition and philanthropy.

Ben Kligler MD

Dr. Benjamin Kligler is Associate Professor of Family and Social Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and vice chair and Research Director of the Beth Israel Department of Integrative Medicine. He was the founding medical director of the Continuum Center for Health and Healing, an integrative medicine practice which opened in May, 2000. In addition, Dr. Kligler is Co-Director of the Beth Israel Fellowship Program in Integrative Medicine, which accepted its first fellows for training in January 2002, and teaches in the Beth Israel Residency Program in urban family practice. Dr. Kligler is the author of Curriculum in Complementary Therapies: A Guide for the Medical Educator, and co-editor of Integrative Medicine: Principles for Practice, a textbook published by McGraw-Hill in 2004. He is also co-editor-in-chief of the peer-reviewed journal Explore:The Journal of Science and Healing. Dr. Kligler is certified in Ericksonian hypnotherapy and acupuncture, and incorporates these and the use of botanical medicines into his primary care practice at the Center for Health and Healing.

Amanda Lathia, MD

Amanda Lathia, MD graduated from University of Pennsylvania school of medicine in 2006. She completed a general internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins Bayview medical center and is currently a geriatrics fellow at the Cleveland Clinic. Her interest in complementary and alternative medicine began during her undergraduate studies as a folklore minor. Prior to medical school, she earned a Masters in epidemiology at the University of Cambridge. Pursuing her interests in CAM, she helped design and analyze a clinical trial in acupuncture during medical school and residency. She also spent time in China and India studying CAM and recently completed the integrative medicine elective at the University of Arizona. Dr. Lathia hopes to integrate CAM into her eventual geriatrics practice and to continue clinical research in this area.

Karen Lawson MD

Board-certified in family medicine and holistic medicine, Karen Lawson, MD, is teaching faculty at the University of Minnesota’s Center for Spirituality and Healing, where she leads the integrative medical education efforts, teaches about shamanism, and directs the health coaching program. She is 2003-2005 past-president of the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA), and a founding diplomat of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM). She has advanced training in homeopathy from the Northwest School of Homeopathy in Minneapolis where she is also on the teaching faculty. She has studied shamanic medicine for the last ten years and brings expertise in meditation techniques, yoga, dance/movement therapies and nutrition. Dr. Lawson speaks and consults nationally.

Sanford Levy MD

Dr. Sanford Levy is an internist in practice in Buffalo, NY. The focus of his practice is both wellness care and the treatment of a variety of chronic health conditions with lifestyle changes and dietary supplements. Professionally, he has achieved fellowship in the American College of Physicians, the nationwide academic organization for internists. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Integrative Holsitic Medicine (ABIHM), the secretary of the Board of Directors of the University at Buffalo Medical School, a volunteer faculty member at the school, and a clinical associate professor of medicine.

Lee Lipsenthal MD

Lee is an internist with postgraduate training in cholesterol disorders. He has served as Medical Director of Dean Ornishs’ Preventive Medicine Research Institiute and is past president of the America Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM). Lee consults with major medical centers, health research organizations and corporations on health and wellnes. He teaches workshops to faculty world-wide, in the area of health care provider health, working with major organizations such as Kaiser Permanente, Cleveland Clinic as well as many large universities, hospitals and medical groups. He has also been recognized by the AHMA as one of the 25 “Pioneers in Holistic Medicine”.

Tieraona Low Dog MD

Dr. Low Dog’s extensive career in integrative medicine began thirty years ago. She studied midwifery, massage therapy, and was a highly respected herbalist before receiving her doctor of medicine degree from the University of New Mexico. Tieraona currently serves as the Director of the Fellowship at the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. She was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the White House Commission of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, served on the Advisory Council for the National Institute of Health (NIH), the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and has been the elected chair of the United States Pharmacopeia Dietary Supplements Expert Panel since 2000.

Bill Manahan MD

Bill Manahan is the Assistant Professor Emeritus at the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Minnesota Academic Health Center in Minneapolis, MN. Bill is also a former president of the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA), a founding member of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM) and the founding program director of Minnesota’s first Rural Family Medicine Residency Program. Bill is presently involved in efforts to transform America’s health care system and the healers involved in that system.

Jeffrey Marrongelle DC

Jeffrey L. Marrongelle is a doctor of chiropractic and a certified clinical nutritionist. He has been practicing homotoxicology and nutrition in connection with his practice for 20 years. Since 1997, Dr. Marrongelle has conducted over 20,000 clinical examinations using heart rate variability (HRV) and has one of the largest data banks for HRV in the world.

Gladys McGarey MD

Dr. Gladys McGarey is recognized as the mother of holistic medicine. She has been a leader in holistic medicine for more than 60 years including serving as past president of the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA) and the Arizona Board of Homeopathic Medical Examiners and a founding diplomat of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM). Recently, she called together nearly forty national leaders in holistic medicine to discuss solutions for our broken healthcare system and presented findings to the White House. Her latest book, Living Medicine is now available. She continues to be a highly sought after national speaker.

Jeanette Michalak RN

Jeanette Michalak, RN, MSN, is responsible for the coordination and provision of consultative services in the areas of assessment, education and initiative development for Planetree affiliates as they develop patient centered care within their existing organizational framework. Prior to joining Planetree, Jeanette spent over 30 years in nursing in the roles of critical care nurse clinician, educator, director and administrator. As Director of Planetree Services at a community hospital in Ohio, Jeanette guided the process of culture change including the creation of a new hospital built on patient centered concepts.

Valerie Miles MD

Dr. Miles received her MD degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston in 1991, and completed her pediatric residency training in 1994 at the University of Utah. She spent an additional year on faculty there as chief resident before going into private practice in Durango, Colorado in 1995. It was here in “small-town” Colorado that Dr. Miles was first introduced to the concept of "holistic medicine" by the parents of her patients, who inspired her to learn more. This September marks the ninth anniversary of establishing her private practice in Jacksonville, Florida, Progressive Pediatrics, which integrates both modern and holistic medical worlds into primary care for children.

Paul Mittman ND

Paul Mittman, ND, EdD, serves as President at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona. He is the first naturopathic physician to hold a seat on the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA) Board of Trustees. Dr. Mittman serves on the Advisory Board of the National Association of Advisors for Health Professions (NAAHP) as well as boards for local charities in Arizona.

Dr. Mittman completed his doctor of naturopathic medicine from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon in 1978, and received his education doctorate in May of this year from the University of Pennsylvania.

John Neely MD

John Neely earned his medical degree from Penn State University in 1973, followed by a pediatric residency and fellowship in oncology at the University of Minnesota. He has been a chair in pediatrics and humanities and is currently professor of pediatrics, humanities, and family medicine. Dr. Neely practices holistic pediatric oncology and also practices at the Integrative Holistic Medicine Center in Hershey, PA within the Department of Family Medicine.

Dr. Neely previously held academic appointments at the University of Cincinnati and also served as chief of the division of hematology/oncology at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. His certifications include American Board of Pediatrics (1977), Sub-Board of Hematology/Oncology (1978), and American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM)(2007). He is consistently listed in “The Best Doctors in America”, is a member of the Kienle Center for Humanistic Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine, and is the founder/director of the Penn State College of Medicine Integrative Medicine Interest Group.

Neil Nixdorff

Neil Nixdorff is a fourth-year medical student at Case Western Reserve University. He has one master’s degree in public health, one in bioethics and is completing another in applied anatomy. His informal education has come from examining indigenous responses to illness in resource-limited communities including Uganda, Belize and the Tibetan diaspora. He has been a member of the national leadership for the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), Humanistic Medicine Action Committee, an attendee of a National Institute’s of Health (NIH)/ National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)-sponsored integrative, complementary and alternative medicine (ICAM) leadership training program, and a member of the dean’s committee at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), examining the integration of CAM electives into the medical school curriculum.

David Riley MD

David Riley MD, is the editor-in-chief of the leading indexed medical journal in integrative medicine, Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine and is a clinical associate professor at the University of New Mexico medical school. In 1992 he opened the Integrative Medicine Institute, a multi-specialty clinic, research center, and healthcare policy institute to improve patient care through the implementation of integrative medicine - combining the best of conventional and complementary medicine. He practices medicine in an integrative practice with Dr. Tieraona Low Dog in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He also lectures and consults internationally on a range of healthcare issues.

Dhanu Sant MD

Dr. Dhanu Sant founded Whole Kids Pediatrics in Columbus, Ohio to provide integrative pediatric care. Dr. Sant incorporates complementary medical practices such as yoga, massage, herbs and dietary supplements. Dr. Sant is a primary care pediatrician who has pursued continuing education in integrative medicine to broaden her treatment options for both preventative and illness care. In addition to her medical training, Dr. Sant completed yoga teacher training and infant massage certification in 2008.

Mark Sciscenti

Mark Sciscenti is a chocolate historian and artisan chocolatier, and is passionate about fine chocolate. He has been actively studying and working with this sacred and healing food since 2000. Mark has recreated historically authentic drinking chocolate recipes from Mesoamerica to modern times. Since 2002, he has given educational presentations around the country on the history of chocolate, the medical benefits and myths of chocolate, and included chocolate tastings at many of these events. He most recently lectured on the medical benefits of chocolate at the Pangea Pediatric Conference in New York in November, 2008.

Ilana Seidel

Ilana Seidel, a fourth year student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPSOM), has extensive experience facilitating American Medical Student Association (AMSA) HuMed retreats and researching their efficacy. The 2007 The Educational Development for Complementary and Alternative Medicine Institute (EDCAM) empowered her to facilitate the incorporation of ‘integrative, complementary and alternative medicine (ICAM) awareness’ into the UPSOM curriculum. As nationally elected AMSA/ICAM Coordinator, Ilana fostered ICAM education and co-initiated International ICAM Day (January 23). Her National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)Fellowship supports her studying the effects of stress management upon fibromyalgia. UPSOM honored Ilana with the January 2008 "Medical Student of the Month” award for her work in medical student wellness and integrative medicine.

Scott Shannon MD

Scott Shannon, MD, ABIHM, has been instrumental in the creation of a holistic and integrative perspective in psychiatry for over a decade. Scott joined the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA) in 1978 as a founding member and served as President from 2000-2001. Academic Press published his textbook, Handbook of Complementary and Alternative Therapies in Mental Health in 2002. Rodale Press released Please Don’t Label My Child in 2007.

Recently, Scott started the country’s first academically based Integrative Clinic in child psychiatry at the University of Colorado-Children’s Hospital in Denver where he works as assistant clinical professor. He has recently been named president-elect of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM).

Alan Shelton MD

Alan Shelton is the Clinical Director at the Puyallup Tribal Health Authority where he has worked as a family practitioner for 25 years. He is also a faculty member at Tacoma Family Medicine. In addition to his MD degree, Dr. Shelton earned a master's in public health at University of Washington Medical School and serves as a clinical assistant professor. He recently wrote Transforming Burnout, a guide-book for people struggling with burnout. His personal recovery from burnout, and deep respect for the Native American spiritual tradition inspired him to share the essential role spirituality plays in achieving satisfaction and workplace fulfillment.

Sherri Tenpenny DO

Dr, Sherri Tenpenny is the founder of Osteomed II, an integrative medicine clinic located in Middleburgh Heights, OH, which focuses on women’s health, relief of chronic pain and a unique method for asthma and allergy relief. Patients from 38 states and 9 countries have regained health through methods applied at Osteomed. Dr. Tenpenny is a writer, author, and international consultant, serving on many advisory boards, including the Global Medical Tourism Association. She is known for her ability to present concepts rarely portrayed by conventional medicine, and complex, scientifically researched information, including the hazards of vaccination.

Peter J. Whitehouse MD

Peter J. Whitehouse, MD, PhD (Psychology) and MA (Bioethics) is Professor of Neurology at Case Western Reserve University. He also holds or has held appointments in psychiatry, neuroscience, psychology, nursing, organizational behavior, cognitive science, bioethics, and history. He calls himself an integrative, narrative, evolutionary healer. His long-term interest is developing innovative clinical and learning environments to promote individual and collective health and wisdom He is the co-author of The Myth of Alzheimer’s (St. Martin’s Press January 2008). He is a co-founder, with his wife, of The Intergenerational School, an innovative, successful, urban public school.

Bruce Wilson MD

Dr. Bruce Wilson is President of Wilson Heart Care Associates, Ltd and also serves as Medical Director for HeartMath, LLC. Dr. Wilson earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1980. He has served on the faculty at the University of Minnesota as the Director of Acute Cardiac Care. He traveled to Pittsburgh to become the director of the University of Pittsburgh Heart Institute. He returned home to Wisconsin to establish a private practice at Columbia Hospital where he served as Chief of Cardiology. His interest in treating the heart as part of the entire patient led him to HeartMath. Dr. Wilson is a recognized leader in HeartMath training and co-developed the current healthcare program.
