Throughout the world in indigenous cultures it is commonly believed that illness is caused by a spiritual interference with the soul of the suffering individual. This can be the result of soul loss and/or spirit attachment or possession. The medicine person of the tribe, the shaman or healer is often called upon to remove the offending spirit as a critical part of the healing ceremony. When these same tribal healers come to the Western world, they sometimes comment on the profusion of “ghosts” we have in our lives, the spirits of those who have died and not moved on from this plane of existence. These earthbound spirits must necessarily attach themselves to living from time to time if not more or less permanently in order to gain energy for their survival. At the very least, without meaning any harm, such spirit attachments can wreak havoc upon the host, draining our energies and mixing their unresolved issues into our lives. One such shaman, teaching a workshop in Cleveland, said to the group of students: “Now I understand why there is so much depression and insanity in America. Every one of you walked in here with at least three ghosts attached to you.” Given the preponderance of such reports over the centuries and across cultures, AHMA welcomes Dr. Alcorn's topic as an opportunity to view tangible evidence and discuss treatment possibilities and implications.

Dr. Alcorn will present a lecture and video demonstration regarding the removal of spirit attachments from a woman who suffered from a variety of psychiatric symptoms. A special feature of the video is that it includes still photos taken with a Polaroid camera while under the influence of a “Luminator.” This device creates a change in the light energy in a room so that Polaroid photographs sometimes show the presence of spirits. In this video some of the spirits encountered during the depossession process are visible on the Polaroid photographs. The implications of the phenomenon of spirit attachment with regard to psychiatric diagnosis and treatment will be discussed.

Dr. Alcorn is a graduate of Yale College and earned his medical degree at Case Western Reserve University. He is in private practice in the Cleveland area and is the Medical Director of Alternative Paths, Inc., a community mental health center in Medina, Ohio. He has studied shamanic practices through the Foundation for Shamanic Studies, soul retrieval with Sandra Ingerman, and more recently “Middle World” work with Betsy Bergstrom (various ways to clear negative energies and influences). After more than forty years experience as a psychiatrist and psychotherapist, he is now incorporating shamanic techniques and hands-on energy healing techniques in his work with psychiatric patients.

If coming from I77, the building will be on the left hand side of the street. It is white with teal trim. The name on the sign in front of the building is FCSU. There is a median on Rockside Road which prevents you from turning into the parking lot. You will need to pass the building and turn left at your first light, onto Plaza Drive, just about 50 yards past the building. This light is also the entrance into Rockside Corners, a shopping plaza. Proceed on Plaza Drive for about 75 yards and turn left onto Heritage Way. This road will empty into the back parking lot of the 6611 building.
